AIDS – Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome. What did I know about this “Disease”? I perceived it to be “Horrible and “Incurable”. One would think they know everything about HIV/AIDS through all the campaigns and messages on the television. But in my opinion, they are all wrong, very wrong. It was the first time I had ever visited any AIDS care centre and before I start writing about it, I just want to say that it was an experience every individual must, or at least should go through. When I walked into the centre, I saw people lying on beds and sofas looking very tired and it saddened me. But when I met the coordinator of the centre, Mrs. Kothari, all my thoughts changed. She explained to us how the patients, who came to the centre, were rejected by their family members and thrown out of the house and therefore they were very vulnerable. She also told us that India has 5.2 million people infected with HIV/AIDS. These people were from all walks of life and from every strata of the society. This has taught me that EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE CAREFUL!!! After talking to some patients, we realized that all they need is some Love, Care and Support. Those people are still smiling and we need to help them make them Smile more!! SPREAD AWARENESS!! By Suvira Chadha VIII C | |
