Peter Wellings from the Ealing Cricket Club, London, UK, will be in VVS for a few weeks and will interact with the students and the Senior cricket team as well as the students in the cricket camp. He is teaching them some tactics that they could use to improve their game.
Excellence in Cricket
Aiming at ‘cricket for all,’ founder of English coaching club “Coaching Cricket Excellence” Mr. Peter Wellings visited Vasant Valley School with fellow cricketer and coach Mr. Huw Jones, and a hope to seek out the school’s cricketing talent.
Mr. Wellings also a member of the PCA (Professional Cricketers Association) began playing cricket at the age of 14. Though he was interested in many sports, he found cricket to be the one he could excel at, and it became his passion. He began to play for Ealing in 1993 and three years of consistent performances for his club resulted in him signing professionally for Middlesex CCC, whom he played for in 1996 and 1997. In his 20’s he began going abroad, visiting and playing at places like Australia, South Africa, etc. Cricket became his way of life.
So of course, when he retired, with an Honours Degree in Leisure Management and 7 years of professional ‘List A’ experience, he set up Coaching Cricket Excellence with the aim of providing top quality coaching to both children and adults of all ages and abilities. “It’s a honey-pot for cricket,” says Mr. Wellings, ‘just cricket, all the time.’ Though the dream began in Ealing, London, the club now has coaching centers all over the world. In South Africa, the Coronation’s Cricket Club comprises mostly of coloured people in a near-by local village, similar to the Ugandan Cricket Club where all children are encouraged to play, regardless of their ability or their experience, and to become involved in cricket. The Ealing Cricket Club, their main coaching centre, has meanwhile gone on to become the best coaching centre in the country. Children from America, Canada, New Zealand, and in fact all over the world come to the club improve their standard of play and to develop their cricketing skills. Here, participants can have fun while being active with a lot of movement and also improving their basic skills, while being involved with the sport. In fact, in Ealing, being involved has taken on a whole new meaning. It’s often happened that the children participating end up coaching for the club and playing for various professional teams. To cite one example, Oliver Wilkin, at the age of 7 began coaching with Coaching Cricket Excellence. Mr. Wellings and his team, spotting the talent, began special training sessions with him, including one-on-one sessions. At age 16, he was signed on as coach, and now at 18 he has just joined the Middlesex CCC.
Mr. Wellings believes that you need to develop the athlete first. Even in Indian cricket, though the Indian team has good talent, they are probably the weakest in form and that is what is holding them back. “Youngsters in India need to build their athleticism. Fitness needs to be ingrained into their beliefs. They need to be 21st century in their training, fitness and strength” “The 13 to 14 age group is the best time for development of co-ordination and athletic potential,” adds Mr. Jones, “At this time, it is important for them to learn how to run, catch and move properly. Strength development, hand-eye co-ordination and balance, these three build a package that is necessary to a cricketer. The more you practice the better you’ll get.” In Vasant Valley, this is what they hope to do. “We want to make Vasant Valley a centre for excellence. Like a garden, we’ll start coaching right at the basics and help the children nurture and grow to become better players. We want to make a difference, one person at a time.”
However, this is not the only centre they plan on setting up in India. In Delhi, they already have started coaching at one of the DPS schools and have set up a centre in Bombay with a local charity, Vision Rescue, where they supply bats and kits, giving access to more and more players. “India has a population of 1.2 billion. More Sachins and more Harbhajans? They’ve just got to be out there!”
When asked what he would like to tell the students at Vasant Valley and to cricket players all over India, Mr. Wellings says, “Have a go. Get stuck in. Enjoy. And don’t be afraid to fail.”
-Pia Kochar, 10
Some students of our school got the chance to practice their skills with Mr. Wellings and Mr. Jones. This is what some of them had to say:
‘It was a great experience learning from them and I really look forward to more programs like this because at the end of the day it really does improves our game.’
- Udai Chawla, 12
‘This program will be an entirely new experience and will expose the whole team to a different side of the game. They (Mr. Wellings and Mr. Jones) are only here for two months, but we intend to make the most out of it.’
-Vir Chopra, 12
