                                             Seeing Things Differently

  • Two people who view the same event may ‘see’ it differently
  • Read the following account of what may have happened when the Portuguese first met the Africans.
  • Think about how each of the following people might have viewed the event- a missionary; a Portuguese trader; an African and a historian
  • Write what each person might have thought in 20 words each

At the meeting, the Portuguese captain presented the African chiefs with gifts of horses, woven cloth and brass pitchers. The captain acted respectfully towards the chiefs. However, the crew’s guns were loaded with gifts and ready. The chiefs were happy with the gifts and agreed to trade. Yet they were only willing to allow the Portuguese to stay only for a week. The chiefs closed the meeting by showing the power they had through their gods. Men with masks representing each of their gods danced, pointing spears and knives at the Portuguese. The Portuguese traders paid little attention. Instead they noted the African’s strength and gold jewellery. The missionaries, very interested, handed out silver religious articles and talked to the Africans about the power of the Christian religion.
