Choose a biography of any well known personality from the past or contemporary times – an Indian or an individual of any other country Read the biography in the holidays Write a review of 1000 words on these parameters Why did you choose this personality? How did this person make a difference to the course of history? Review the author's perception- are they objective/ with bias/ chatty style etc B. CASE STUDY- THOSE DAYS BY SUNIL GANGOPHADHAY Read the book as a secondary literary source of Bengal and India in the 19 th century The novel gives a flavour of the period of rule of the English East India Company with its main power centre – Bengal and of course the city of Kolkata This period of history was vibrant with the strains of emerging nationalism against a foreign government- and the interplay of education on the existing social norms of 19 th century Bengal Looking at the contents of the novel as source material – write a 1000 word historical research paper under the three subheadings – Political/ Social/ Economic – your analysis must have at least 10 references from the novel (you can quote) and 5 questions that come to your mind about the period Refer to itiyas.com or www.indianchild.com and the novel – to uncover the interplay of historical forces which culminated in the Revolt of 1857 After you have looked for evidence like a budding historian try to draw your conclusions-see if you can draw parallels with any contemporary issues! I hope this exercise will be exciting and add fillip to your pursuit of History. Happy Holidays! Sreela Mitra
